Optimize your memory Card - Tip 1

Maximum number of files in Root folder of Memory CardsAs memory cards are getting bigger (up to 1Gb etc), the limitations of the FAT (16) file system that all mobile phones are compatible with on their external memory cards becomes more apparent.

In particular, there is a limitation on the number of files and folders in the root folder of a FAT16 filesystem of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

For someone wishing to hold their collection of MP3’s on a MobyMemory MMC card of 512mb or 1Gb, it then becomes very relevant when recorded at 128kbps or 112kbps (a reasonable quality for mobile playback), you will want to fit up to three or four hundred files on the card.

When transferring the files onto the card, it is very likely that new files will be rejected after a certain number by your memory card reader.

There are 2 main options to squeeze all those songs onto your cards:

  1. Keep your filenames under 8 characters in length (to allow the full 512 files on root folder) OR
  2. Keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all sat in the root folder.Â
