nVidia has announced the release of the GoForce 6100, the first in a family of applications processors designed exclusively for handhelds. Its power consumption is said to be less than half that of any other applications processor on the market, and it boasts a wide variety of features for mobile phones including integrated WiFi, USB 2.0, an extensive collection of multimedia codecs and a high quality audio system.The market for applications processors is currently at $1.5 billion and is expected to more than double to $3.3 billion by 2010. Michael Rayfield, general manager of handheld business at nVidia, called mobile phones “our most personal of computers,” and says that nVidia is uniquely position to capitalize on this explosive growth.
